Culture is a complex system of images, stories, symbols, and beliefs. We absorb these messages, interpret them, and carry them into the ways we understand ourselves and the world around us. But what happens when we stop accepting those messages at face value and start examining how they work?
Cultural Viscera is an independent research, writing, and interactive design project developed by Purée Fantastico. It explores the relationships between media, cultural narratives, human behavior, and the systems of meaning we create and perpetuate.
Part cultural criticism, part visual investigation, and part interactive experience, Cultural Viscera invites audiences to look closer, question assumptions, and discover connections that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Curiosity as a Method
At Purée Fantastico, research isn't simply a preliminary step in the creative process. It's how we begin to understand the problem we're trying to solve.
Our approach draws on anthropology, cultural analysis, strategic thinking, and design to investigate not only what people communicate, but how those messages are constructed, interpreted, and experienced.
Cultural Viscera takes that approach beyond the boundaries of a traditional client engagement. Rather than beginning with a commercial brief, the project begins with a question, an observation, or a contradiction worth investigating.
The resulting work brings together research, critical interpretation, writing, information architecture, and visual storytelling to make complex relationships accessible without reducing their complexity.
From Research to Experience
The challenge wasn't simply to present research. It was to create an environment in which audiences could explore it.
Cultural Viscera translates cultural analysis into an interactive system that allows visitors to move between scenes, examine visual details, explore annotations, and follow connections between evidence and interpretation.
The experience is designed to encourage active observation rather than passive consumption. Each interaction offers another opportunity to consider how individual details contribute to a larger cultural narrative.
The project's research, writing, conceptual development, information architecture, user experience, and visual design were developed through Purée Fantastico, with AI-assisted support for code implementation.
The Methodology in Action
Cultural Viscera demonstrates a principle central to Purée Fantastico's practice: effective communication requires more than a compelling message. It requires an understanding of the relationships between intention, context, interpretation, and experience.
The same investigative thinking that informs our branding, messaging, and creative direction work is applied here to cultural research and interactive storytelling.
The subject matter may be different, but the underlying questions remain remarkably similar. What are we communicating? What assumptions are embedded in that communication? How might different audiences interpret it? And how can design help people see and understand something differently?
